When we talk about forgiveness, we all want it and we all should be willing to give it. In Matthew 6:9-13 KJV, the Lord’s Prayer mentions forgiveness specifically in 6:12, And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. We are asking God to forgive us as we forgive others. Directly after the Lord’s prayer, Jesus reiterates about forgiveness, what happens when we do forgive and what happens when we don’t forgive. Matthew 6:14-15 KJV, For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
In Luke 11:24-26 Jesus is pretty much saying that whatever you pray believe that you will receive, but when you are praying first forgive and once again this is another reminder that if you do not forgive, your Father cannot forgive you. And there is no better display of forgiveness than a sinless Jesus asking God to forgive those who demanding his crucifixion Luke 23:13-21 KJV. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do…. Luke 23:34 KJV.
People hurt us badly so we need to ask God to help us forgive them. So, you ask how do I forgive?
The word of God says you forgive by Ephesians 4:31-32 KJV, Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
And Colossians 3: 12-14 KJV, Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. If that didn’t help you maybe this will, Romans 12:19 KJV, Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. God does not need our help, therefore don’t get even and do not duplicate the actions of those who have wronged you onto them or someone else. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good, Romans 12:21 KJV.
Don’t struggle with forgiveness and remember you are a child of the most High God. No, you can’t do it in the flesh because the flesh is weak. But with God you can, in Jeremiah 32:27 KJV, Behold, I am the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?
Here is a list of reminders of why you can forgive:
1. You are made in God’s image.
2. You are a new creature in Christ.
3. You are a disciple of Christ.
4. The Holy Spirit dwells in you.
5. God said Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.1Peter 1:16 KJV
Don’t get tired of doing what is good because you will reap blessings when it’s time. You don’t have to take my word for it, it is in God’s word, Galatians 6:9 KJV And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
